Accountants for Whitby businesses and individuals
If you're looking for an accountant for your Whitby business or your own tax affairs, Wright Pottage can help. Our office is just down the coast in Scarborough, and we work with limited companies, sole traders, partnerships, landlords and individuals in Whitby on their accounts and tax. We're happy to talk through what you need before you commit to anything.
A Scarborough firm working with Whitby
We're based at Europa House, 20 Esplanade, Scarborough YO11 2AQ, and we're open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. You don't need to come to the office. We work with Whitby clients by phone and email, and you can meet us in person by appointment. Our team has over 100 years of combined team experience.
Whitby's economy is built on visitors and the sea, and our work reflects that. We help holiday let owners, guest houses, cafés, pubs and restaurants, independent shops, and the fishing and harbour trades, including share fishers, who HMRC classes as self-employed. Topics that come up often for Whitby clients include:
- Holiday lets: the furnished holiday lettings tax regime ended from 6 April 2025 (1 April 2025 for companies). Holiday lets are now taxed under the normal residential property rules, which changes how mortgage interest and furnishings are treated.
- Seasonal staff: taking on staff for the summer means registering each new starter with HMRC through payroll on or before their first payday, and reporting every pay run on time.
- Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 have needed it from 6 April 2026. The threshold falls to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028.

Questions people in Whitby often ask
Your office is in Scarborough. Can you still act for my Whitby business?
Yes. Much of our work is done by phone and email, and you can meet us at our Scarborough office by appointment.
I let a holiday cottage in Whitby. What changed in 2025?
The furnished holiday lettings tax regime was abolished from 6 April 2025 (1 April 2025 for companies). Holiday lets are now taxed like other residential lettings, which affects how mortgage interest, furnishings and capital gains are treated. We can look at what it means for your return.
Do I need Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
It depends on your qualifying income from self-employment and property before expenses. It has applied from 6 April 2026 if that was over £50,000 in 2024–25, and applies from April 2027 above £30,000 and from April 2028 above £20,000. We can help you check and get set up.
Can you run payroll for staff we only employ in the summer?
Yes. We can set up seasonal starters, run your pay runs, make the RTI submissions to HMRC and deal with leavers at the end of the season.
